The quality of UAV 3D reconstruction first depends on the acquisition, not the post-processing algorithm. Incomplete route coverage, insufficient overlap, exposure changes, and missing facades will cause holes in the model, sparse point clouds, or local deformations. An executable inspection process should be established during the collection process.
Determine flight altitude based on result resolution
Flight altitude affects ground resolution, single frame coverage, and total image number. Engineering projects should first clarify final measurement, viewing or reporting requirements before determining heights and lenses.
Maintain stable and adequate image overlap
Both heading and side need to preserve enough overlap so that the same area appears in multiple photos. When there are dense buildings, complex vegetation, or obvious terrain undulations, redundant coverage should be added. Fixing a single overlap rate number does not solve all scenarios. The acquisition still needs to be adjusted based on target height differences, textures and occlusions.
Facades and complex equipment require additional shots at an angle
Using only vertical overhead shots tends to miss the building facade, under the eaves and the sides of the equipment. Inclined routes, orbiting flights or low-altitude supplementary shots can be added to provide more perspectives for complex structures.
Control exposure, shutter and flight speed
Overexposure, loss of shadows, and motion blur should be avoided as much as possible. When the lighting changes rapidly, you need to pay attention to the picture differences caused by automatic exposure. Windy conditions will also affect route stability and image clarity.
Complete material inspection before leaving the venue
Check photo quantity, positioning information, sharpness, exposure, route gaps and key area coverage. If problems are discovered, make up the flight before ending the collection to avoid returning to the office only to find out that reconstruction cannot be done.
